h-ety-h.rb won't run on Ubuntu Linux following instructions on readme.

Reported by timinman | August 27th, 2009 @ 05:56 AM | in 0.8 Release

I cloned the repo of shoes, cd'd and raked. I put a symbolic link in /usr/local/bin.

I cloned hackety hack, cd'd and ran shoes h-ety-h.rb and got "No such file to load: Bloops"

I have a hunch that it's not finding the files because of the way shoes is installed, but I've no time to figure it out right now. Anyone have it (this github version) working on Ubuntu?

    Thanks for the report.

I'm running it on Arch, not Ubuntu. It Just Worked for me. I'll give the shoes guys a shout today, and see if they have any ideas. I have a hunch that your hunch is right.

Okay, so, I just got on #shoes and talked to the new maintainer, MenTaLguY. He said that "the issue is that the shoes build you've got there doesn't include bloopsaphone" and "I don't think current releases of shoes include bloopsaphone."

Now, it did work for me, so, that's kinda strange. Did anything come up when you rake'd to install shoes? The only thing that I personally had to install was portaudio.

Whos shoes did you clone? I think that when I did it, I just cloned whymirror's...

Hey thanks for working on hackety hack! Why got my into Ruby and I was worried it would be no fun without him!

Because shoes had seemed to build successfully, I hadn't read the rake messages, but it was right there, an error about bloopsaphone.

Ubuntu has the wrong portaudio installed by default. On Ubuntu, you have to do sudo aptitude install portaudio19-dev .

One more question: Are there supposed to be lessons, or have those gone away for now?

    Thanks,

    Tim

His stuff certainly influenced me, too. Nobody could ever replace _why, but we can try to keep his projects alive...

Cool. I'll make sure to add that to the instructions.

As far as lessons go, There's already a ticket for that:

    http://hacketyhack.lighthouseapp.com/projects/36137/tickets/3-home-...

As it says, there's nothing there right now. Do you know of any places where the ones that were there were saved? It sounds like an awesome feature, just needs some good ones made up.

I'll mark this ticket fixed when I update that README.
